Special Protection System (SPS) Review Team

ReliabilityFirst maintains the official Special Protection System (SPS) database for its footprint.  ReliabilityFirst also reviews all new or modified SPS's and conducts a periodic review of all existing SPS's in the region.

  • The NERC Standards associated with SPS (PRC-012-1, PRC-013-1, PRC-014-1, and PRC-015-1) are the basis for these reviews.
  • The Transmission Performance Subcommittee (TPS) and Protection Subcommittee (PS) of the Reliability Committee are responsible for these reviews. A standing team of members from the TPS and PS conduct the reviews.
  • The ReliabilityFirst SPS review procedure is available in the document library below.

On September 20, 2017, FERC approved PRC-012-2 in Order No. 837.  PRC-012-2 will become effective on January 1, 2021 and will replace PRC-012-1, PRC-013-1, PRC-014-1, and PRC-015-1.  At that time, responsibility for SPS will go to the Reliability Coordinators and Planning Coordinators, and RF will retire its SPS review procedure.

If you have any questions, use the Contact Us page and direct your question to the Reliability Committee.
